Yes From Inverness, but Skye Gets Most of the Day
From Inverness, the combination works surprisingly well. The usual route follows the shore of Loch Ness, continues west through the Highlands to Eilean Donan Castle, crosses the Skye Bridge and spends the afternoon around Portree and the Trotternish peninsula. The tour most people book is Timberbush's Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle day trip.
Two things to know before you book. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, meaningful sightseeing at both Loch Ness and Skye in one day is too much, so choose a 3-day Highlands and Skye tour. And most Loch Ness and Skye day tours from Inverness do not include a Loch Ness cruise or a long stop at Urquhart Castle: the loch is a scenic part of the journey to Skye. The right tour depends on which place matters more to you.
- Skye is the priority: book a one-day Skye tour from Inverness that travels via Loch Ness.
- Loch Ness is the priority: spend a separate half or full day around the loch.
- Both matter equally: allow at least two days.

Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
The road from Loch Ness to Skye passes some of the best-known sights in the Highlands.
From Inverness, the road west runs along Loch Ness to Invermoriston, then through Glen Moriston and Glen Shiel below the Five Sisters of Kintail to Eilean Donan Castle and the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. On the Isle of Skye, day tours visit Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, the Quiraing, Sligachan and the Cuillin, and some go to the Fairy Pools. Back at the loch, Urquhart Castle and the Loch Ness cruises fill a separate day.
Isle of Skye & Eilean Donan Castle From Inverness
Best for seeing Skye properly while still taking in Loch Ness · about 12 hours · from Inverness · Loch Ness → Eilean Donan Castle → Skye → Portree → Old Man of Storr → Kilt Rock → Lealt Falls, or the Quiraing on some tours → Inverness
This is the most sensible way to combine Loch Ness and Skye in one day. Timberbush runs a 12-hour Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle tour from Inverness. It leaves from Railway Terrace at 8:00am, returns at about 8:00pm and covers about 275 miles, every day of the year, from £63 booked direct, with groups of 16 to 37 and a minimum age of 4.
The first part of the day follows Loch Ness before turning west towards Eilean Donan Castle and the Skye Bridge. Once on Skye, the tour is about the island, not the loch. Typical stops are Portree for lunch, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, Lealt Falls, scenic viewpoints along the way and Eilean Donan Castle, where going inside is an optional extra.
What happens at Loch Ness?
You see it as part of the route. Depending on the tour, that means a short photo stop, views as you drive along the shore, or a brief stop around Invermoriston or another point. On Timberbush's tour it is a quick break at Invermoriston. That is why this is a Skye tour with Loch Ness included, not a Loch Ness tour that also visits Skye.
Choose it if
- you are staying in Inverness
- Skye is the main destination
- you only have one day
- you want Eilean Donan Castle too
- seeing Loch Ness from the road is enough
You generally do not get
- a Loch Ness cruise
- a full Urquhart Castle visit
- Drumnadrochit
- The Loch Ness Experience
- free time in Fort Augustus
Inverness: Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle Day Trip
Timberbush's coach day and the most-reviewed Skye tour from Inverness, with more than 5,000 ratings. You get the north-east of Skye with lunch in Portree, Storr, Kilt Rock and Lealt Falls, and Eilean Donan on the way. The Loch Ness part is the drive and a short break at Invermoriston, and the castle entry is extra if you want to go inside.

Highland Explorer Small-Group Skye Day Tour
Best for several of Skye's famous viewpoints in one day · about 12 hours · 4.8 from 903 GetYourGuide reviews
Highland Explorer sells a 12-hour small-group day trip from Inverness that travels via Loch Ness and Eilean Donan Castle before spending most of the day on Skye. The itinerary takes in a Loch Ness photo stop, Eilean Donan Castle, Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, the Quiraing and Sligachan, with Highland scenery on the way back. That is a strong Skye itinerary for a single day.
Why choose this kind of tour?
Because it does not pretend Loch Ness and Skye can have equal time. Loch Ness is a scenic stop, and Skye gets the bulk of the sightseeing, which is exactly the right balance if Skye is your priority.
The trade-off
If you have dreamed of sailing on Loch Ness, visiting Urquhart Castle or spending time hunting for Nessie, you will not get that from this day. Plan Loch Ness separately.
Another small-group option
Rabbie's Skye and Eilean Donan day leaves Inverness at 8:00am in a 16-seat minicoach and follows the same Loch Ness, Eilean Donan and Skye route, from $96 with 4.8 from 1,823 reviews.
Inverness: Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle Day Trip (Highland Explorer)
The one to pick if you want the Quiraing and Sligachan as well as Storr and Kilt Rock. It meets opposite the Victorian Market entrance on Union Street, and at Loch Ness you get a photo stop, not a cruise.

Loch Ness, Skye & Eilean Donan Castle Tour
Best if you are searching for a combined Loch Ness and Skye day · about 11.5 hours · from central Inverness
GetYourGuide lists a tour titled Inverness: Loch Ness, Skye, & Eilean Donan Castle Tour, run by Highland Experience Tours and lasting about 11.5 hours. Its itinerary covers some monster-spotting along Loch Ness as you leave Inverness, the village of Invermoriston, Glen Moriston, Eilean Donan Castle, the Isle of Skye, Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and Sligachan.
Is it more Loch Ness-focused?
Not really. The title gives Loch Ness equal billing, but the day still treats the loch mainly as part of the road to Skye. Most of the sightseeing time goes to Eilean Donan, Portree, Trotternish and the Skye landscapes. That is not a criticism: it is what makes the day possible.
Choose it if
- you like the idea of ticking off both places
- a drive along the Loch Ness shore is enough
- Skye is still the real target
- you are based in Inverness
Good to know
- it meets at the Waverley Centre on Union Street
- entrance fees and lunch are extra
- it is not suitable for children under 3
Inverness: Loch Ness, Skye, & Eilean Donan Castle Tour
Half an hour shorter than the other two, with Sligachan and the Cuillin views on the way home in place of the Quiraing. It has a smaller review record than the Timberbush and Highland Explorer days, so read the recent ones.

Private Skye & Loch Ness Tours
Best for families, groups and anyone who wants to choose the stops · roughly 9 to 12.5 hours depending on the tour · pickup in Inverness · private
A private tour is where combining Loch Ness and Skye becomes more flexible. Private tours from Inverness can include Loch Ness, views of Urquhart Castle, Eilean Donan Castle, Sligachan, Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, the Quiraing, the Fairy Pools on some routes and the Talisker area on some itineraries.
Timberbush sells its private Skye and Eilean Donan tour direct: about 12.5 hours and 275 miles, from 8am to 8:30pm with a flexible pickup point, from £1,050 per group for up to 7 passengers or £1,120 for a small coach of up to 16. On Viator, the Isle of Skye Full Day Private Tour from Inverness lasts about 9 hours for up to 8 people, passes Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, stops for lunch in Portree and is rated 4.8 from 1,076 Viator reviews. Viator's private Inverness-to-Skye tours generally run from about 9 to 10 hours or more, depending on the itinerary.
What a private tour changes
You still cannot fit unlimited sightseeing into one day, but you decide where the emphasis goes.
Loch Ness matters more?
Ask for a proper photo stop or a short stop by the loch, and drop a less important stop on Skye.
Eilean Donan does not interest you?
Use the time elsewhere.
Travelling with children?
Comfort breaks are usually much easier to arrange.
Want the Fairy Pools?
A private guide may be able to build them into the route, depending on time and conditions.
When private makes sense
A family of 5 to 7, a group of friends, a photography trip, specific attractions you must see, mobility or comfort needs, or anyone who dislikes big coaches.
Can You Really See Loch Ness and Skye in One Day?
From Inverness: yes, but not equally.
A one-day tour can give you
- Loch Ness scenery
- Eilean Donan Castle
- the Skye Bridge
- Portree
- several viewpoints in the north of Skye
- a full Highland road trip
What it cannot give you
- a deep Loch Ness visit and a deep Skye visit on the same day
You have to choose which place gets the time, and on almost every sensible one-day route that place is Skye.
Why Inverness Works, and What You See Between Loch Ness and Skye
Inverness → Loch Ness → Invermoriston and Glen Moriston → Glen Shiel → Eilean Donan Castle → Kyle of Lochalsh → the Skye Bridge → the Isle of Skye.
Look at the map. From Inverness, the road west runs along Loch Ness first, so the loch is not a big detour but part of the way to the west coast. That is why Loch Ness and Skye make sense together from Inverness and much less sense from Edinburgh. The road between them is one of the reasons the day works so well.
Invermoriston
A small Highland village on the western side of Loch Ness. Some tours use it for a short comfort or photo stop.
Glen Moriston
The road climbs west through more and more dramatic mountain scenery.
Glen Shiel
One of the most impressive sections of the drive. The mountains steepen and the road feels increasingly remote.
Five Sisters of Kintail
A famous Highland ridge that dominates the scenery near Glen Shiel.
Eilean Donan Castle
The major stop between Loch Ness and Skye, and one most travellers recognise straight away, even with little interest in castles. It sits where three sea lochs meet, close to the road to the Skye Bridge, and most Skye tours from Inverness stop here.
Is Eilean Donan Castle Worth Adding?
Yes, if you are already going to Skye. The castle sits right on the route, with no real detour.
Tour itineraries generally either stop for photographs or allow enough time for optional entry. The view from outside is the famous one anyway.
Go inside if
- you like castles
- the weather is poor
- you have not visited many Scottish historic sites
- your tour gives you around an hour
Stay outside if
- Skye scenery is the priority
- you prefer photography
- you want to save the admission cost
- time is limited
What Do You Actually See on Skye in One Day?
A good Inverness day tour usually focuses on north-east Skye and the Trotternish peninsula, where many famous landscapes sit within one loop.
Portree
The island's main town. Most tours stop here for lunch and free time, and the colourful harbour is the classic view.
Old Man of Storr
One of Skye's most recognisable rock formations. Day tours usually stop at a viewpoint or for photos, not for the full hike.
Kilt Rock
A dramatic sea cliff with basalt columns above the coast, and an easy, quick sightseeing stop.
Quiraing
One of Skye's most extraordinary landscapes. Some tours allow a short walk and a viewpoint stop.
Sligachan
Known for its old stone bridge, the views of the Cuillin and Skye folklore.
Lealt Falls
Included on some Timberbush itineraries, and a fairly easy scenic stop on the Trotternish side of the island.
Will You See the Fairy Pools, the Storr and the Quiraing?
Usually a viewpoint, a short walk and photographs, not a full hike.
Will you see the Fairy Pools?
Not on every tour. The Fairy Pools are in a different part of Skye from the classic Portree, Storr, Kilt Rock and Quiraing loop, and adding them takes time from elsewhere. Some private tours include them. If they are your priority, choose a tour that lists them by name, such as the Isle of Skye and Fairy Pools day trip from Inverness (from $106, 4.8 from 1,302 reviews). Do not assume an "Isle of Skye tour" includes them.
Will you visit the Old Man of Storr?
On many tours, yes, but you usually do not hike to the top. The full walk takes far longer than a coach itinerary can spare, so most one-day tours give you a viewpoint, a roadside stop and a short photo break. If hiking the Storr is important, stay overnight on Skye.
Will you visit the Quiraing?
Often, yes. The Highland Explorer tour and other Inverness tours list a Quiraing stop. Again, expect a viewpoint, a short walk and photographs, not a full hiking route.
A Loch Ness Cruise or Urquhart Castle on the Same Day as Skye?
Possible on a private itinerary, but something has to give, usually Skye.
Can you take a Loch Ness cruise and visit Skye on the same day?
It is possible with a private itinerary, and usually a poor idea on a standard day tour. A 50-minute or one-hour cruise becomes much longer once you add check-in, parking or the transfer, boarding, waiting and getting back on the road, and that time has to come from Skye. With only one day, we would rather see more of Skye and take the Loch Ness cruise on another half-day.
What about Urquhart Castle and Skye in one day?
Possible, but again something has to give. Some private tours pass Urquhart Castle or stop briefly nearby, while standard Skye day tours usually go for Eilean Donan instead. If Urquhart Castle matters to you, do it separately.
A very efficient Inverness trip
Day 1: a Loch Ness cruise and Urquhart Castle, for example on the cruise-and-castle trip from Inverness. Day 2: the Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle. That is far better than squeezing everything into one day.
One Day vs Two Days
Two days is our preferred plan if both places matter to you.
Choose one day if
- you only have one spare day
- Skye is the priority
- you are based in Inverness
- you are comfortable with a long tour
- a brief look at Loch Ness is enough
Choose two days if
- both Loch Ness and Skye matter
- you want a Loch Ness cruise
- you want Urquhart Castle
- you want more time at the Skye viewpoints
- you prefer less rushing
Day 1: Loch Ness
A cruise, Urquhart Castle, Drumnadrochit, then Fort Augustus or the eastern shore. The Inverness cruise and Urquhart Castle trip covers the first two without a car.
Day 2: Skye
Eilean Donan, Portree, the Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing, on a tour such as Highland Explorer's Skye day.
What About a 3-Day Tour From Edinburgh or Glasgow?
If you start in Edinburgh or Glasgow, this is where the 3-day format makes much more sense.
Multi-day tours combine Loch Ness, Glencoe, the Great Glen, the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle and Highland villages, with overnight stays on the way. Rabbie's, among others, runs Skye, Loch Ness and Glencoe itineraries in multi-day formats. Edinburgh and Glasgow are far south of both places, so adding Skye to a Loch Ness day trip creates a route dominated by road time. Three days turns that travel into a proper Highlands journey.
From Edinburgh, the 3-Day Isle of Skye and the Highlands tour is from $242 with 4.8 from 3,072 reviews. From Glasgow, GetYourGuide had no 3-day Skye tour when we checked, but Timberbush's 3-day Isle of Skye, Highlands and Loch Ness tour from Glasgow sells on Viator from about $281, rated 4.8 from 217 Viator reviews, with a choice of single, double or no accommodation.
Can you do Skye and Loch Ness from Edinburgh in one day?
We would not recommend it. A normal Edinburgh-to-Loch-Ness tour already takes around 12 hours, and a meaningful Skye day from Inverness takes another 11 to 12. Putting Edinburgh, Loch Ness and Skye into one day would mean seeing almost everything through the window. From Edinburgh, take a Loch Ness day trip or a 3-day Skye and Loch Ness tour, not both in one day.
Can you do Skye and Loch Ness from Glasgow in one day?
Same answer. The standard Glasgow Loch Ness route already takes around 11.5 hours, and Skye deserves more time. Use a multi-day tour.
Is a Skye Day Trip From Inverness Worth It?
Yes. Inverness is probably the best mainland base for a single-day guided Skye trip.
What you get without changing hotels
Loch Ness, Eilean Donan, the Skye Bridge, Portree, Trotternish, the Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing. The compromise is that Skye stays a sampler: no long hikes, no west Skye or Neist Point, no long Fairy Pools walk, no distillery tour, no Dunvegan Castle and no sunset photography. For those, stay on the island.
How long is the day?
Most group tours take around 11 to 12 hours. Timberbush lists 8:00am to 8:00pm, 12 hours and 275 miles, its private version is listed at 12.5 hours, and Highland Explorer's GetYourGuide tour also takes around 12 hours. This is a proper full-day trip.
Is there too much driving?
There is a lot of driving, but unlike some long tours the scenery stays strong: Loch Ness, mountain glens, Glen Shiel, Eilean Donan, the sea lochs, Skye, the Cuillin and Trotternish. The road is part of the attraction. Still, if you hate long days in a vehicle, stay overnight on Skye.
Small Group, Large Coach or Private?
For a day this long, we prefer a small group if the price is reasonable. The sightseeing itself may be very similar.
Small-group advantages
Easier to talk to the guide, faster stops, fewer boarding delays, a less crowded vehicle and a more personal atmosphere.
Larger coach advantages
Often cheaper, widely available, well-established routes and easier last-minute booking.
A group tour is best if
Price matters, you want a proven route, you are travelling solo or as a couple, and you do not need to change the itinerary.
A private tour is best if
There are 5 to 7 of you, you want the Fairy Pools, you want more time at Loch Ness, you have specific photography priorities, you are travelling with children or you want hotel pickup. Private gets much easier to justify as the group grows.
October, Winter, and What to Wear and Bring
Timberbush runs its Inverness Skye and Eilean Donan day tour all year round.
Is the tour good in October?
Yes. Skye is spectacular in autumn, with autumn light, fewer visitors than in peak summer, atmospheric clouds and quieter viewpoints. The costs are shorter daylight, more rain and wind, less room for long stops and weather that can hide the mountains. A guided tour is especially useful, because you are not the one driving a long Highland day.
Does the tour run in winter?
Some do. Winter changes the day: very short daylight, possible snow and ice, fast-changing weather and fewer chances for long outdoor stops. The island is still there in winter, but itineraries may be adjusted, so always check the exact tour and date.
What should you wear?
A waterproof jacket, warm layers, comfortable shoes and a hat, with gloves outside summer, and a small day bag. Do not dress for Inverness at 8am: Skye can have completely different weather later the same day.
What should you bring?
Water, snacks, a power bank, a camera or phone, travel-sickness medication if you need it, a card or cash for an optional attraction, and a lightweight waterproof layer. Most tours stop for lunch in Portree, so you usually do not need to bring a full meal.
The Best Tour for What Matters Most to You
Skye first, Loch Ness first, or both equally.
If Skye is the priority
Choose a 12-hour Inverness tour that includes Eilean Donan, Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing, with Loch Ness as the scenic first part of the drive, such as Highland Explorer's day trip. It is the best use of one day.
If Loch Ness is the priority
Do not book a Skye day tour. Book a dedicated Loch Ness tour instead. From Inverness you can spend a full day on Urquhart Castle, a cruise, Fort Augustus, Dores, the Falls of Foyers and Drumnadrochit. See our Loch Ness from Inverness guide.
If both matter equally
Use two days. That is the simplest answer: there is too much to see in both places to pretend a 12-hour coach loop can do them equally well.
Which Loch Ness and Skye Tour Should You Book?
Five picks, from one long day to three.
Best one-day combination: Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan day tour from Inverness
Travels via Loch Ness, and the most realistic way to include both places in one day. From $93.
Best small-group option: Highland Explorer, Inverness to Skye
Loch Ness, Eilean Donan, then a strong Skye itinerary with Portree, the Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing.
Best for flexibility: a private Skye and Loch Ness tour from Inverness
A good fit for families and groups who want to choose the stops.
Best overall if both places matter: two separate days from Inverness
Day 1 for Loch Ness, perhaps on the cruise and Urquhart Castle trip. Day 2 for Skye.
Best from Edinburgh or Glasgow: a 3-day Highlands, Loch Ness and Isle of Skye tour
Do not force both into one day from the central belt. From Glasgow, Timberbush's 3-day Skye tour sells on Viator. Glencoe on the way north is covered in our Loch Ness and Glencoe tours guide.
Loch Ness and Skye Tours: Common Questions
One day or two, the cruise, the castles, the Skye stops and the best base.
Can you visit Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye in one day?
Yes, from Inverness. Many full-day Skye tours follow Loch Ness before continuing to Eilean Donan Castle and Skye. Loch Ness is normally a scenic stop, not a full visit.
How long is a Loch Ness and Skye tour from Inverness?
Most take around 11 to 12 hours.
Does a Skye tour from Inverness include Loch Ness?
Many do. The road west follows part of Loch Ness before continuing through the Highlands.
Does the tour include a Loch Ness cruise?
Usually not. On Skye-focused tours, Loch Ness is normally a drive along the shore or a short photo stop.
Does the tour visit Urquhart Castle?
Not usually as a full stop. Some tours pass nearby or give you a view of it. Eilean Donan Castle is the main castle stop on most Skye itineraries.
Does the tour visit Eilean Donan Castle?
Most of the main Inverness-to-Skye tours do, either as a photo stop or with optional entry.
Do you see Portree?
Yes, on most full-day Skye tours from Inverness, usually with time for lunch.
Do you see the Old Man of Storr?
Many tours stop at a viewpoint or for a short photo stop. They do not normally allow time for the full hike.
Do you see the Quiraing?
Many tours include a Quiraing stop or a short walk.
Do you see the Fairy Pools?
Not on every tour. If they are important to you, choose a tour that lists the Fairy Pools by name.
Can you do Loch Ness and Skye from Edinburgh in one day?
You could cover the distance, but not in a way we would recommend. Take a multi-day Highlands tour instead.
What is the best base for visiting both Loch Ness and Skye?
Inverness is the most practical mainland base if you want separate day trips to both.
