Three Very Different Days, Depending on Where You Start
From Inverness, you can reach the loch quickly, take a cruise, visit Urquhart Castle and still be back in the city for lunch. From Edinburgh, a Loch Ness day trip is a 12-hour-plus road trip through Glencoe and the Highlands. From Glasgow, the classic route adds Loch Lomond and Fort Augustus before you return in the evening.
So decide what kind of day you want before you choose a tour:
- If Loch Ness itself is the priority, start from Inverness.
- If you want a one-day sampler of the Highlands, start from Edinburgh or Glasgow.
- If you want both Loch Ness and Skye, use at least two days, or base yourself in Inverness.
For every tour compared side by side, see our guides to Loch Ness from Inverness, from Edinburgh and from Glasgow.

Best Loch Ness Day Trip From Inverness
If Loch Ness is the reason you are travelling, Inverness is the best base.
Jacobite runs a 3.5-hour package from Inverness Bus Station that covers the coach out, a Loch Ness cruise, Urquhart Castle and the coach back to Inverness. Direct prices started from around £54, with departures at 9:15am and 2:15pm when we checked. That gives you a complete first visit to Loch Ness without giving up the whole day.
Half day without a car
09:15 leave Inverness Bus Station · morning cruise on Loch Ness · late morning at Urquhart Castle · back in Inverness around lunchtime. This is the most efficient first-time itinerary.
Full day with a car
Inverness → Dochgarroch → Urquhart Castle → Drumnadrochit → Fort Augustus → Dores and the eastern shore → Inverness. Add one cruise, not several. You get the headline attractions and the quieter side of the loch.
From Inverness: Loch Ness Cruise and Urquhart Castle
The whole Loch Ness day in one ticket: the coach from the bus station, the sailing and castle admission, with about an hour ashore at Urquhart. Take the morning departure and the afternoon is still yours for Culloden or the city.
Free cancellation up to 2 days before · secure checkout via GetYourGuide
Bus, taxi, driving and the canal walk to Dochgarroch are all compared in our guide to getting from Inverness to Loch Ness.
Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
The same day trips reach far more of Scotland than Loch Ness alone.
From Edinburgh and Glasgow, the Loch Ness road passes Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Fort William and Pitlochry. From Inverness, Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns sit just east of the city, while the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle and the Glenfinnan Viaduct each make a long day out of their own.
Best Loch Ness Day Trip From Edinburgh
A Loch Ness day trip from Edinburgh is a Highlands tour with Loch Ness as the furthest major stop.
Typical routes pass Callander or the Trossachs, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Fort William and the Great Glen to Fort Augustus on Loch Ness, and come home through Pitlochry. Most tours take around 12 to 12.5 hours. If you picture six hours on the road just to look at Loch Ness, that is too long. Seen as a guided road trip through the Highlands, the day makes much more sense.
For most first-time visitors the best Edinburgh day runs Edinburgh → Glencoe → Fort William → Fort Augustus and Loch Ness → Pitlochry → Edinburgh. The most-reviewed version of that day is the Timberbush Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands tour (from $94, 4.6 from 21,139 reviews). If you definitely want the boat, choose a tour with the cruise included, such as Rabbie's small-group Loch Ness and Highlands tour with cruise (from $135, 4.7 from 1,322 reviews). Our Loch Ness from Edinburgh guide compares the rest.
Best Loch Ness Day Trip From Glasgow
Glasgow has a strong route because Loch Lomond sits right on the road north.
Timberbush's one-day tour from Glasgow runs roughly 8:00am to 7:30pm, and its 2026 schedule lists the Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands day as a daily departure. The route is Glasgow → Loch Lomond → Rannoch Moor → Glencoe → Fort William → Fort Augustus and Loch Ness → Pitlochry → Glasgow.
You see two famous lochs in one day, Loch Lomond and Loch Ness, with Glencoe in between. On the standard large-coach tour the Loch Ness cruise is usually an optional extra, not part of the ticket. Book the Timberbush Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands tour from Glasgow (from $86, 4.6 from 2,103 reviews), or see our Loch Ness from Glasgow guide for the alternatives.
Loch Ness Day Trip With a Cruise
For most visitors, a cruise is the best thing to add to the day.
| Jacobite cruise | Direct price | Our pick on GetYourGuide |
|---|---|---|
| 50-minute cruise from Dochgarroch | From £21 | From $33 · 4.7 (167) |
| 50-minute cruise from Clansman Harbour | From £21 | From $33 · 4.4 (3,606) |
| 2-hour canal and Loch Ness cruise | From £29 | From $46 · 4.7 (2,399) |
| 2-hour cruise and Urquhart Castle | From £33 | Book direct with Jacobite |
| 3.5-hour Inverness coach, cruise and castle | From £54 | From $76 · 4.7 (2,640) |
Direct prices are Jacobite's own headline fares when checked and can change by date. The cruise-and-castle sailing from Clansman Harbour is not sold with reviews on GetYourGuide, so we link the operator.

Loch Ness Day Trip With Urquhart Castle
For a first visit, we would usually include Urquhart Castle.
The castle works well on a day trip because you see it from the water, you can then walk around the ruins, it adds some history to the day, and it gives you one of the classic Loch Ness viewpoints. Jacobite sells cruise products that include Urquhart Castle entry, while its other cruises only pass the castle on the water. If you want to go ashore, make sure your booking says castle entry included.
Which sailings land at the castle and which only pass it is set out in our guide to Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness cruises.
Loch Ness Day Trip Without a Car
From Inverness
Very easy. Choose the organised cruise and castle package, the public bus to Drumnadrochit (Monday to Saturday), or a taxi to Dochgarroch or Clansman Harbour.
From Edinburgh
Take a guided coach tour. Connecting public transport for a same-day Loch Ness trip from Edinburgh is far less efficient.
From Glasgow
The same advice: a guided Highlands tour is usually the simplest way to see Loch Ness and get back the same day.
Loch Ness Day Trip by Car
Self-driving works best from Inverness, where you have time to build a proper route instead of rushing to the loch and back.
Western-shore route
Inverness → Clansman Harbour → Urquhart Castle → Drumnadrochit → Fort Augustus.
Full loop
Inverness → Dores → Falls of Foyers → Fort Augustus → Invermoriston → Urquhart Castle → Drumnadrochit → Inverness. Best if you have most of the day.
How Much Time Do You Need at Loch Ness?
2 hours
Enough for a short cruise or Urquhart Castle.
3–4 hours
Enough for a cruise and the castle, or for Drumnadrochit and The Loch Ness Experience.
Half a day
Enough for a cruise, the castle and Drumnadrochit.
A full day
Enough for a cruise, the castle, Fort Augustus, the eastern shore and the Falls of Foyers or Dores.
Loch Ness With Glencoe, Skye or Culloden in One Day
Can you do Loch Ness and Glencoe in one day?
Yes. That is the classic Edinburgh and Glasgow tour, because Glencoe lies on the western Highland route north. If you are already based in Inverness, though, going south to Glencoe and back makes the day much longer. Our guide to Loch Ness and Glencoe tours compares them.
Can you do Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye in one day?
From Inverness, yes, but Skye should be the priority. Day tours such as the Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle tour from Inverness (from $93, 4.8 from 5,087 reviews) follow Loch Ness on the way but do not give you a full cruise and castle visit. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, use a multi-day tour. See Loch Ness to Skye.
Can you do Loch Ness and Culloden in one day?
Yes, and it is one of the best full days from Inverness: Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns. If history is your main interest, it makes more sense than trying to add Skye. The Loch Ness Cruise, Castle and Outlander tour (from $67, 4.7 from 859 reviews) covers that circuit.
Best Loch Ness Day Trip for Families
For most families, a short cruise and Urquhart Castle works best: the day switches between the boat and the ruins often enough to keep it interesting. For Nessie-focused children, go for The Loch Ness Experience (from $27, 4.4 from 60 reviews) and the Deepscan cruise in Drumnadrochit. If you are coming from Edinburgh or Glasgow, think about whether your children are comfortable with 11 to 12 hours on the road.
Loch Ness Day Trip in October
October is a good month for a Loch Ness day trip. Cruises, Highland day tours and Urquhart Castle are all still operating, and the scenery turns autumnal. The days are shorter, boat decks are colder, rain is more likely and attractions close earlier: Urquhart Castle shuts at 5pm in October (last entry 4pm), against 8:15pm from April to August, according to Historic Environment Scotland. Book your cruise and castle for the morning or early afternoon.
Loch Ness Day Trip in Winter
From Inverness, keep it simple: one of the selected year-round cruises, Urquhart Castle (open until 4:30pm from November to March) and The Loch Ness Experience. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, take an established coach tour instead of planning a huge self-drive day on unfamiliar winter roads.
One Day or Two Days at Loch Ness?
A second day changes the pace dramatically.
Choose one day if
- you are based in Inverness
- you only want the main highlights
- you are on a short Scotland trip
Choose two days if
- Loch Ness matters a lot to you
- you want time in Inverness too
- you want Culloden and Clava Cairns
- you dislike long coach days
- you are coming from Edinburgh or Glasgow
From Edinburgh, Timberbush's 2-day Loch Ness, Inverness and Highlands tour rates 4.9 from 237 reviews and adds a night in Inverness.
